The Ministry of Economy published NOM-173-SE-2021, Juices, coconut water, nectars, non-alcoholic beverages with vegetable or fruit or vegetable content and pre-packaged flavored non-alcoholic beverages-Denominations-Specifications-Commercial information and test methods.
NOM-173-SE-2021 was published on February 28 in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF in Spanish) and will enter into force 180 days after its publication.
This standard is an update of NOM-173-SCFI-2009.
EnAmong the changes, it states:
- Nectars must contain a minimum of 25% juice, puree and/or pulp in order to be denominated as such.
- As for flavored beverages, they must inform the actual percentage of vegetable or fruit or coconut or coconut water or vegetable they contain on the front of the container.
- Juices may not contain thickeners, added sugars, colorings, sweeteners, flavorings or acidulants.
