The Americas -Mexico: Consumption of sweeteners decreases after implementation of new food labeling

The consumption of sweeteners in Mexico has been affected by the labeling of food products and beverages with high calorie and sugar content, according to an analysis by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

On the one hand, sugar consumption contracted 4% in the last annual season, which ended in September 2021, to 3 million 935,000 tons.

The Americas – Colombia: Invima issues alert on tuna brand for illegal labeling

The Instituto Nacional de Vigilancia de Medicamentos y Alimentos (Invima) identified that the product Tuna lomitos en aceite ‘Rey del Mar’, with sanitary registration No. RSA-0010992-2020, does not comply with the current sanitary regulations on labeling, because it shows that the tinplate container is coated with paint that hides the information of another food.

The Americas – Argentina: Front labeling law: new challenges

Following the passing of the law “Promotion of Healthy Eating” (better known as Front Labeling) in the National Congress, the Insights division of the consulting firm Kantar conducted an update of the data from the survey conducted in April 2021 on the degree of knowledge that Argentines have about the standard and its influence on changes in eating habits.

Article: Effect of five front of package nutritional labeling models on time to select food by Brazilians

Objective: to compare the time Brazilian adults required to make food choices with different models of front-of-pack nutrition labeling. Methods: Interviews were conducted with 150 participants, who were instructed to select the healthiest product between two foods, with eight pairs of images presented. One of the products in each pair had warnings (high in sugars, sodium, or saturated fat), evaluated in different formats according to the group in which the individual was allocated: magnifying glass, octagon, circle, triangle, and traffic light. The number of correct answers for the healthiest product in each pair and the time to correctly select of the healthiest product were measured.
