EU: Draft  Commission  Regulation  amending  Annexes  II  to  Regulation  (EC)  No 1333/2008  of  the  European  Parliament  and  of  the  Council  as regards  the use of ascorbic acid (E300), sodium ascorbate (E 301) and calcium ascorbate (E302) in tuna

The proposal sets, in the interest of legal certainty, a maximum level for the use of ascorbic acid (E 300), sodium ascorbate (E 301) and calcium ascorbate (E302) which applies only for tuna in food categories 09.1.1 “Unprocessed fish” and 09.2 “Processed fish and fishery products including molluscs and crustaceans” in Part E of Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008. The use of those food additives in tuna intended for canning in high amounts to artificially restore the colour of fresh tuna flesh does not comply with the general conditions for inclusion and use of food additives in the Union list and with the quantum satis principle.

EU: Draft – Amending Delegated Regulation (EU) 2017/1798 as regards the lipid and magnesium requirements for total diet replacement for weight control

This delegated Regulation aims at amending certain compositional requirements set out by Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2017/1798 for total diet replacement for weight control based on the relevant EFSA scientific opinion.

Spain: New nutritional labeling: an opportunity for olive oil

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food points out that harmonization in a single EU front nutritional labeling will help to ensure consumer safety and to highlight the health properties of olive oil.

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has expressed the need to recognize the health properties of olive oils in the future front nutritional labeling of the European Union (EU), which will be mandatory and equal for all Member States in the near future, to convey to the consumer all the information with the greatest possible clarity and solvency.

EU -EFSA: Public Consultations/Draft opinion on review of existing health based guidance values for copper

EFSA’s Methodology and Scientific Support (MESE) Unit has launched an open consultation on the draft Scientific Opinion on an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for exposure to copper, in response to a mandate by the European Commission (M-2020-0087). The approach applied in this assessment is the first case of a compound that falls within the context of the 2021 EFSA Statement on “Establishing health-based guidance values for regulated products that are also nutrients”. The aim of this public consultation is to collect constructive input on the establishment of an ADI for copper, within the context of the 2021 EFSA Statement and other relevant EFSA Guidance.
