The Americas – USA: FDA releases list of priority guidance topics for foods program

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) and Office of Food Policy and Response (OFPR) released a list of draft and final guidance topics that are a priority for the FDA Foods Program to complete during the next 12 months.

The agency anticipates it will publish many of these documents by January 2023

Article: Elements for the design of a tax levied to foods and beverages high in sodium, fats and/or sugars in Colombia

A broad international evidence shows that diets high in sodium, saturated and trans fats, and added sugars are risk factors for the development of obesity, cardiovascular diseases and type II diabetes. Therefore, this have motivated nearly 50 countries to implement “healthy taxes” to discourage the intake of some products with a high-density level of these nutrients, most of them being taxes to sweetened beverages. Through a literature review about the international experiences regarding “healthy taxes” and the estimation of a quadratic demand model (QUAIDS), this study analyzes the potential impact of different types of taxes on foods and beverages high in sodium, fats and/or sugars in Colombia on (i) the intake of these nutrients, (ii) the government revenue collection and (iii) the households’ available income for different income levels.

ANVISA’s Organizational Governance Policy has just been disclosed. The measure was published in the Official Gazette (D.O.U. in Portuguese). The norm improves the leadership, strategy and control mechanisms to promote effective performance, responsible management and ethical conduct of its agents and collaborators.

The Americas – Argentina: ANMAT sanctions mayonnaise brand for misleading information on labeling

Provision 492/2022 establishes the prohibition of “the elaboration, fractionation and commercialization throughout the national territory of the falsified product whose label reads: Mayonnaise reduced in lipid value gluten-free without tacc, brand: NATURA, fantasy name: mayonnaise with lemon juice, RNE: 19000208-9, RNPA: 19010390, VEN: 03/28/22 05 L: 07/01/21 2138 1V4″. The reason is that it lacks records and is “falsely labeled by using records of an establishment and product belonging to the firm NIZA S.A, turning out to be an illegal product.”

Around the World – Spain: AESAN issues an alert for the presence of undeclared allergens on the labeling of mixed nuts

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN in Spanish) has learned through the European Food Alert Network (RASFF), of an alert notification sent by the health authorities of the Netherlands, regarding the presence of peanuts and Unlabeled cashews in Jumbo brand salt-free trail mix.
