The Americas – Costa Rica: New Procedures for the simplified sanitary registration of low-risk processed foods

The new Decree No. 43291-S establishes the procedure for simplified sanitary registration by notification, sanitary registration, registration acknowledgments, raw materials, control and surveillance of processed foods and low-risk cosmetics.

It is excluded in its scope of application:

  • Food products that despite being considered low risk present some nutritional descriptor.
  • Products specifically aimed at a population under 3 years of age.
  • Energy drinks and food supplements
  • Food or raw material containing any extract of the cannabis plant.

The Americas – Mexico: New standard on commercial information – general electronic product labeling published

This standard is not mandatory and only covers the commercial part (Name, denomination or company name and fiscal address, including postal code, city or state of the manufacturer or person responsible for manufacturing, etc.).

This Mexican Standard establishes the terms, specifications and requirements for the use of electronic labeling as a complementary method and/or for the correction of inaccuracies of commercial information of the physical labeling for products in general, subject to the field of application of a Mexican Official Standard that establishes requirements of commercial information, of national manufacture or of foreign origin that are marketed in the national territory.
This Mexican Standard does not apply to the textile, clothing and footwear sectors.

The Americas – Brazil: The main changes expected in food regulation in 2022

In both 2020 and 2021, there have been important changes and developments at the regulatory level for food and dietary supplements. Now, what other changes can we expect in 2022?

  • As of October 2022, frontal nutritional labeling must begin to be implemented in Brazil, in addition to changes in the nutritional table. The main challenge is to harmonize the nutritional labeling of the Mercosur bloc, of which Brazil is a part.

  • Another relevant issue, from which we can expect changes in 2022, refers to the area of food additives. The Mercosur bloc, which has been reviewing the harmonized regulation of food additives for years, is expected to reach an agreement and could make the update next year.

Around the World – India: Food safety activists oppose FSSAI draft regulation on GMO foods

Citizen groups including food safety activists from across the country and the RSS affiliate Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) on Thursday voiced their concerns over the central regulator FSSAI‘s draft regulation on genetically modified (GM) foods, saying the move would pave the way for “easier entry” of transgenic foods into the country without protecting the interests and health concerns of consumers.

Nutrition Labeling: Global Action Network on Nutrition Labeling

The development of easily understandable nutrition labeling is essential to empower and facilitate consumers to make healthier food choices. The Global Action Network on Nutrition Labeling, consisting of more than 19 countries in 2021, was formed in 2019 to share country experiences and good practices and encourage countries to accelerate efforts around nutrition labeling.
