The Americas – Brazil: Webinar/Anvisa: Sanitary requirements for vegetable oils and fats

ANVISA informs about the realization, on Monday, April 18, from 15h, a webinar on sanitary requirements for vegetable oils and fats.
Its objective is to clarify doubts about the Resolution of the Collegiate Council (RDC) 481/2021 and the Normative Instruction (IN) 87/2021, which deal with the subject.

Articles – Brazil: The importance of food and nutrition labeling for consumer food autonomy

Food and nutrition labeling is a strategic tool of the Ministry of Health (MS) allied to the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), developed with the aim of minimizing consumer exposure to industry abuse and misleading information; promote resources for access to more adequate, healthy and safe food, reduce rates of obesity, overweight and food insecurity; and for / beyond the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

This research aims to highlight the importance of labeling in promoting consumer autonomy for healthier food choices through nutrition education, reading and proper understanding of labels. It is a literature review, which sought guidelines on mandatory food labeling based on current Brazilian legislation, available on the ANVISA website, of which three resolutions were used.

The Americas – Brazil: Resolution on the restriction of the use of trans fats food industries

Resolution No. 632 of March 24, 2022, was published in the Official Journal of the Union, which provides for the restriction of the use of industrial trans fats in foods. The new resolution applies to all foods, including beverages, ingredients, food additives and processing aids, including those intended exclusively for industrial processing and those intended for food services.

The Americas – Brazil: Resolution DRC No. 623 on tolerance limits for foreign matter in food and the general principles for their establishment

This Resolution establishes the tolerance limits for foreign matter in foods, the general principles for their establishment and the methods of analysis for conformity assessment purposes.

It applies to the entire food production chain.

It does not apply to aspects of mischief, impurities and defects that are already established in specific standards.

The Americas – Brazil: Resolution DRC No. 617 on Mandatory laboratory analysis and reporting of phenylalanine, protein and moisture levels in processed foods

The National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA in Spanish) published DRC No. 617, which establishes the obligation to perform laboratory analysis and transmit information on phenylalanine, protein and moisture levels in processed foods.

This Resolution applies to processed foods with a protein content between 0.10% and 5.00%.

This Resolution does not apply to the following products:

I – foods and beverages with added aspartame;

II – foods intended exclusively for food service; and

III – foods intended exclusively for industrial processing.
