Brazil – ANVISA authorizes the use of food additives and processing aids in several food categories

The National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (ANVISA in Portuguese) published the Resolution – RDC No. 740/2022 that authorizes the use of food additives and technological aids in various food categories.

Brazil – Amendment on whole wheat flour in the Technical Regulation on the identity and quality of wheat flour

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA in Portuguese) published the MAPA Ordinance No. 469/2022 that amends the Annex to the MAPA Normative Instruction No. 8, of June 2, 2005, on technical regulations on identity and quality of wheat flour. Whole Wheat Flour: product resulting from the crushing or milling of wheat (Triticumaestivum L.) or other species of wheat of the genus Triticum, where the anatomical components – starchy endosperm, bran and germ – are present in the typical proportion that occurs in intact grain, losses of up to 2% of the grain or 10% of the bran are allowed.

Join us on Tuesday, 30 August, 2022, to participate on the webinar “The Superiority of Octagonal Warning Labels in Central America and the Caribbean” hosted by the Pan American Health Organization, to present the results of the studies in Cental America and the Caribbean on the efficacy of the different labeling systems. The session will serve to discuss policy implications of the results obtained in these studies and disseminate the knowledge and build partnerships to exchange experiences on front-of-package labeling (FOPL) implementation.

Argentina – CONAL meeting reviews progress on front-of-package warning label and trans fats

The 146th regular meeting of the National Food Commission (CONAL in Spanish) was held recently. The following topics were reviewed:

  • Importance in the integration of the sanitary system of food control, as each area contributes to achieve better health.
  • Advances in the implementation of the access to the affidavit and the public search engine of the nutritional seals and warnings system.
  • Sending to administrative procedure the Draft Joint Resolution that establishes the new maximum limits for trans fatty acids in finished products and raw materials and the prohibition of the processing of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil of industrial production.
  • Sending to administrative procedure the projects referred to the modification of article 1353 bis of the Argentine Food Code (CAA) on the update in the specifications of infant formulas, the incorporation of new enzymes and native vegetable species.
  • The Commission agreed to consider new topics, among which are the integral proposal of the articles on peanuts and their derivatives, the incorporation of alcoholic beverages of artisanal production and the determination of the limit of arsenic in edible algae.

Paraguay – Progress on the draft law “Establishing the implementation of the frontal warning labeling according to its nutritional composition”

The members of the Industry, Commerce and Tourism Commission analyzed the bill “Which establishes the implementation of the front warning labeling according to its nutritional composition”, presented by senators Pedro Santa Cruz, Gilberto Apuril, Blanca Ovelar, Desirée Masi and Esperanza Martínez.

The purpose of this document is to establish mandatory front warning labeling on processed and packaged food in the absence of the consumer and marketed in the national territory, according to the nutritional composition of energy (calories), sugars, saturated fats, trans fats and sodium.
