The Americas – Panama: Ministry of Health repeals resolution on food containing or derived from genetically modified organisms

As of April 6, Resolution No. 165 of March 10, 2022, “which establishes the general and sanitary requirements to be met by foods that are, contain or are derived from genetically modified organisms”, will no longer be in effect.
According to Resolution No. 219 published in the Official Gazette, which indicates that the suspension is due to the fact that the General Directorate of Public Health informed that the content of Resolution No. 165 is under review and public consultation, for which reason it was considered to leave it without effect.

The Americas -Panama: Private sector unions request suspension of debate on labeling law

Members of 7 organizations of businessmen and producers of Panama requested the National Assembly to suspend the discussion of Bill 265 “Law of Frontal Labeling of Nutritional Warning”, since Panama as a signatory of the Central American Economic Integration Subsystem (SIECA) is currently participating in the discussion of the Central American Technical Regulations (RTCA) on this matter.

The Americas – Panama: Interest groups oppose stopping discussion of the front-of-package food labeling law

Nutrition specialists have defended the continuation of the discussion of Bill 265, after hearing the request of businessmen to stop the bill, which would oblige imported and local food products to detail their nutritional information on the front of the packages.

The argument of the businessmen is that the norm cannot be implemented in the country because Panama is still in arrears with the rest of Central American countries in terms of establishing a general labeling technical regulation.
