México – President of the Senate emphasizes the importance of the approval of the General Law on Adequate and Sustainable Food

At a press conference, the President of the Senate, Ana Lilia Rivera Rivera, explained that the new General Law on Adequate and Sustainable Food will lay the foundations for the promotion, protection, respect and guarantee of the right to food in Mexico. This new framework was approved by both Chambers of Congress and awaits publication in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF).

Senator Ana Lilia Rivera emphasized that the regulation marks a historic milestone because of its obligatory cut towards the guarantee of healthy food for all Mexicans by the Mexican State. She also added that it leaves clear rules and precise institutions, with no budgetary impact, but with organization and order for the bodies involved.

Mexico – Senate unanimously approves the draft of the General Law on Adequate and Sustainable Food

The Senate approved a bill to enact the General Law on Adequate and Sustainable Food, which establishes the bases for the promotion, protection, respect and guarantee of the right to food.

The draft decree was approved, in general, with 98 votes in favor; and 95 votes in particular, so it was sent to the Chamber of Deputies for its corresponding procedure.

The Law prioritizes the rights to health, the environment, water, as well as the best interests of children, in the policies related to adequate food designed by the Mexican State.
