Argentina – Appeal filed with the Ministry of Health against changes in the front-end labeling law

The Inter-American Heart Foundation (FIC in Spanish), together with the Argentine Federation of Graduates in Nutrition (FAGRAN in Spanish), filed two appeals before the Ministry of Health to demand the suspension of the modifications to the front labeling law, implemented late last year by Milei’s administration.

“These modifications, published at the end of 2024 in the Official Gazette, introduce regressive changes that contradict the spirit of the law and directly affect the right of the population to access clear and truthful information about the products they consume”, stated from FIC.

The foundation maintains that “provisions 11362/2024 and 11378/2024” of the National Administration of Medicines, Food and Medical Technology (ANMAT in Spanish) “alarmingly weaken the Law for the Promotion of Healthy Food (PAS Law) and its regulations”.

Argentina / Opinion – Clarifications and weaknesses of the front-end labeling law

The gradual appearance of products with front labeling in supermarkets and grocery stores reignited the discussion on the real usefulness of the measure and the possible impact on people’s healthy eating. Many people expressed their criticism of the measure since its debate, arguing that the criteria used to label the products are too rigorous and complicated, which leads to incomprehensible labeling situations. In addition, there is a total absence of other information, which makes it difficult for consumers to discern between one product and another.

Throughout this report we will seek to shed light on the regulations, providing additional information to what exists on the products and pointing out the contradictions and problems of such extreme impositions as the one adopted by the Argentine ruling class in this particular case.

Argentina – Health Authorities assure that companies are complying with the Front-End Labeling Law

The Secretary of Access to Health, Sandra Tirado, assured today that “we are fully complying with the timeframe foreseen by the Law” on Front Labeling and Promotion of Healthy Eating, regulated last March, and specified that once the time for large companies to apply it is over, the “second stage” has already begun, which aims at small and medium-sized companies to do so.

The Americas – Argentina: Front-end labeling law to be enforced between August and September

The Secretary of Access to Health, Sandra Tirado, confirmed this Wednesday that the front labeling law will start to be applied “between August and September” and explained that the products will have “a black seal, octagonal in shape, with white letters, very clear and visible”.

The official assured that the articles that will appear on the shelves with the black label will be those of large industries because Law 27.642 on Promotion of Healthy Food was regulated in March and this group has up to 6 months to adapt while the small and medium industry has 1 year for its adaptation.
