Mexico – Cofepris performs risk analysis on the use of Red No. 3 FD&C dye in food, beverages and medicines

The Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (COFEPRIS in Spanish) is aware of the recent decision of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the revocation of the authorization of the use of the colorant Red No. 3 FD&C, as well as its entry into force.
Therefore, COFEPRIS, taking into consideration the above, is currently performing the risk analysis according to the use, in compliance with Annex III Colorants with ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) established in the Agreement by which additives and coadjuvants in food, beverages and food supplements, their use and sanitary provisions are determined, which involves a review period and will conclude in the coming weeks.
Regarding medicines, COFEPRIS has instructed its scientific advisory body, the Permanent Commission of the Pharmacopoeia of the United Mexican States, to analyze the use of Red No. 3 FD&C in the additives chapter of the FEUM, specifically in the list of colorants.

Paraguay – INAN announces the Draft Resolution Modification of Resolutions GMC 09/96 and 63/18 Food Additives

The National Institute of Food and Nutrition (INAN in Spanish) has announced the public consultation of the Draft Resolution of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare, MODIFICATION OF GMC RESOLUTIONS No. 09/06 AND 63/18 ON FOOD ADDITIVES.

Paraguay – INAN announces public consultation on modification of GMC Resolutions 09/96 and 63/18 Food Additives

The National Institute of Food and Nutrition (INAN in Spanish) published the Draft Resolution for the Modification of Resolutions GMC 09/96 and 63/18 Food Additives. The draft aims to include the additive rosemary extract, INS 392, with antioxidant function, with limit 0.015 g/100 g and with the note “expressed as the sum of carnosic acid and carnosol” in Food Category 8 – Meat and Meat Products, subcategories 8. 2.1.1 Fresh Sausages; 8.2.1.2 Dried Sausages; 8.2.1.3 Cooked Sausages; 8.2.2.1 Raw salted meats; 8.2.2.2.2 Cooked salted meats; 8.2.3.1 Canned and mixed meats; 8.2.3.2 Semi-preserved and mixed meats; and 8.2.4.1 Dehydrated meat products, of MERCOSUR Resolution GMC Nº 63/18.

Codex – REPORT OF THE FIFTY FOURTH SESSION OF THE CODEX COMMITTEE ON FOOD ADDITIVES Chengdu, China 22 – 26 April 2024

The Codex Committee on Food Additives (CCFA) held its fifty-fourth session in Chengdu, China, from 22 to
26 April 2024, at the kind invitation of the Government of the People’s Republic of China. Dr Yongxiang Fan,
Professor, Deputy Director, China National Centre for Food Safety Risk Assessment, chaired the session,
which was attended by 41 Member Countries, one Member Organization, 23 Observer Organizations, FAO
and WHO. A list of participants is contained in Appendix I.

Brazil – Anvisa announces that recordings of sectorial dialogues in the area of Food are available

The National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA in Portuguese) announces that sectoral dialogues in the area of Food are now available on its platform. Two of the virtual meetings were held on July 4, at different times:

Periodic update of Regulatory Instruction (IN) 211/2023, which establishes technological functions, maximum limits and conditions of use of food additives and technological aids authorized for use in food.
