The Americas – Argentina: Risks and opportunities of front labeling

The Argentine Government passed Law 27.642 on the Promotion of Healthy Eating, better known as the Front Labeling Law, and the 90 days from its enactment on November 12 are already running for its regulation by the Executive Power.
The implementation of the Law implies changes in all food producing companies, what remains to be seen is who will be able to strategically capitalize on this opportunity to promote changes and improvements in current systems in order to optimize internal processes.

The Americas – Argentina: The Ministry of Health already has a draft regulation for the Frontal Labeling Law

The Ministry of Health presented to food companies a draft of the regulation of the Front Labeling Law (Law 27.642). Minister Carla Vizzotti said that exemptions are considered for special cases in which it is not possible to meet the compliance deadlines, in other cases there is no flexibility in the times provided by law as companies want.

The meeting, led by Sandra Tirado of the Health Access Secretary, was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Productive Development, Alejandro Sethman. The officials showed some details about the regulation, but without sharing any document.

The companies are requesting an extension of these implementation deadlines. The Law gives 180 days from the sanction for large companies to implement the black octagons.

The Americas – Argentina: When should the Labeling Law come into force and what are companies asking for?

March 14 will be the 90th day since the enactment of the Law on Front-of-Food Labeling and, therefore, the deadline to regulate and apply the new standard will expire. Until then, companies are seeking to establish some specifications.

In this regard, the content of the regulation is already defined in the text approved by Congress, some points will be defined in the regulation and the companies want to be given more time to adapt packaging, differentiate nutrients and exclude some products.

The Americas -Argentina: New Resolution on wine labeling requirements

The National Institute of Viticulture issued Resolution 26/2021 by which it establishes conditions for the labeling of wines.

The labels used in fractioned vitivinicultural products must be registered with the NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF VITIVINICULTURA (INV in Spanish) prior to their circulation.

Labels printed prior to this standard that do not meet the conditions established in this resolution, may only be used with prior authorization from this Agency, within the terms that it determines.
