Colombia – A bill that seeks to restrict junk food in schools across the country is advancing in Congress

The House of Representatives of Colombia took a key step in the discussion of a bill aimed at transforming eating habits within school environments. The initiative, identified as Bill 245 of 2025, was approved in the first debate by the Sixth Commission of the House of Representatives and will now continue its process in the plenary for its second debate.

The main objective of the proposal is to regulate the sale and promotion of ultra-processed foods in stores and cafeterias of public and private educational institutions. Among the proposed measures is the prohibition of selling sugary drinks and products with nutritional warning labels within educational institutions, as well as limiting their advertising in these spaces.

In addition to the restrictions, the project includes actions to promote healthy eating habits among students. Among them, ensuring free access to drinking water and promoting the inclusion of fruits, vegetables, and locally sourced products in the school food offerings. It is also proposed to strengthen the connection with suppliers coming from peasant, family, and community agriculture.
