Brazil – Anvisa promotes sectoral dialog to discuss the update of regulations on turmeric-derived supplements
The National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA in Portuguese), thru the General Food Directorate (GGALI in Portuguese), will hold a virtual sector dialog next Tuesday (March 17), from 9:30 to 11:00 AM, to present and contextualize the proposed update of Normative Instruction (IN) 28/2018, which establishes the lists of components, usage limits, declarations, and additional labeling requirements applicable to food supplements.
This initiative is related to the publication of Alert 4/2026, issued by Anvisa in February, which warns healthcare professionals, manufacturers, and consumers about the potential risk of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of products containing concentrated turmeric extracts (Curcuma longa L.). This alert originated from evaluations conducted by international regulatory authorities and the analysis of adverse event reports related to the consumption of these products.
In Brazil, turmeric-derived ingredients are currently authorized for use in dietary supplements, under Royal Directive No. 243/2018 and Circular No. 28/2018, which establish the sanitary requirements applicable to these products.
The regulatory proposal developed by GGALI includes, among other points:
- The inclusion of a specific warning on the labeling of dietary supplements that contain turmeric-derived ingredients; and
- The clarification on the interpretation of the established limits for curcumin indicates that these limits should be applied to the total content of curcuminoids.
- During the event, the Anvisa technical team will present the context of the proposal, the evidence considered, and the main elements of the regulatory update.
