The National Institute of Food and Nutrition (INAN in Spanish) has announced the celebration of the Meeting with members of the Technical Committee for Standardization – CTN 20 Meat and Meat Products. The meetings developed worked on the Paraguayan Standard Project for processed meat products, led by the National Institute of Technology, Standardization and Metrology (INTN in Spanish), with support from the Regulatory Affairs Unit of INAN, in addition to other public and private sector institutions.

Peru – INACAL updates technical standards on substitute flours and olive oil

The National Quality Institute (INACAL) has published Directorial Resolution No. 014-2024-INACAL/DN and Directorial Resolution No. 015-2024-INACAL/DN, which update a series of technical standards on the determination of protein in substitute flours and a series of physical and chemical analyses on olive oil.

Bolivia – IBNORCA publishes new draft food-related standards

The Bolivian Institute for Standardization and Quality (IBNORCA in Spanish) has published the following draft standards:

APNB 33009. Dairy products – Fresh cheese – Requirements (First revision) (Annuls and replaces NB 33009:2003).
APNB 38049. Sugar – Determination of insoluble matter (sediment) in white sugar by membrane filtration.
APNB 39010-1. Flours of vegetable origin – Manual test method for the determination of dry and wet gluten content.
APNB 39010-2. Flours of vegetable origin – Mechanical test method for the determination of dry and wet gluten content.

The deadline for comments is the 2nd and 3rd week of September.

CARICOM – Draft CARICOM Regional Standard For Labelling of Prepackaged Foods

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Regional Organization for Standards and Quality has published draft voluntary standard FCRS 5:202x, Labelling of Foods- Pre-packaged foods – Specification (Revision). This standard is a revision of the Caribbean Community Standard “Labe/ling of Foods – Prepackaged foods – Specíficatíon CRS 5: 2010”, which has been prepared and issued by the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) and approved by the xx Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED). The standard was prepared as a guide to manufacturers and importers on the labelling considered necessary to provide adequate information to the consumer.
lt is intended to:
Supplementary nutrition information is intended to increase the consumer’s understanding of the nutritional value of the food and to assist in interpreting the nutrient declaratio n s rovided on other parts of the label. Front-of-package nutritional warning labels interpret nutritiona ·n ormation, add ease and speed to information access and improve the consumer’s ability to make critic and better-informed decision.

Peru – Discussion of the bill to promote consumer rights in egg labeling will be promoted in Congress

In Peru, the “International Conference on the growth of the cage-free egg industry and the need for a transparent labeling law” was the first meeting of national and international specialists from the poultry sector to discuss the current reality of the egg industry in this country.
During the meeting, they discussed the egg labeling bill, presented by Congresswoman Sigrid Bazán, which promotes transparency in the information offered to consumers on poultry production methods.
The congresswoman gave details on Bill No. 418/2023-CR, known as the “Law that promotes consumer rights in egg labeling”, which has been presented to the Commission for Consumer Defense and Regulatory Agencies of Public Services, as well as to the Agrarian Commission. Although the initiative has not yet been debated within these commissions, Congresswoman Bazán has strong arguments to motivate its approval.
