Guatemala – Ministry of Health announces entry into force of Central American regulation on food sanitary registration
The Ministry of Health announced that as of August 5, 2024, in accordance with Resolution COMIECO 483-2023, the Central American Technical Regulation RTCA 67.01.31:20 Processed foods. Procedure for the granting, renewal and modification of the sanitary registration. The provisions of this procedure shall apply:
- To pre-packaged processed and semi-processed foods marketed in the States Parties, which are offered as such to the consumer.
- It does not apply to unprocessed foods, raw materials, and food additives.
- Excludes ready-to-eat processed foods that are packaged at the time the product is ordered, requested or purchased by the final consumer.
Argentina – Amendment to the Food Code published to incorporate the list of edible algae and maximum permitted levels of Arsenic
The Secretariat of Health Quality and the Secretariat of Bioeconomy have published Joint Resolution 10/2024, which amends Article 923 of the Argentine Food Code to establish the list of authorized edible algae and establishes the maximum levels of inorganic arsenic (Max 1.0 mg/kg).
Argentina – Pink Rock Salt from Pakistan incorporated in the Food Code
The Secretariat of Sanitary Quality and the Secretariat of Bioeconomy have published Joint Resolution 8/2024, which incorporates article 1264 quater to the Argentine Food Code, which will designate as Pakistan Pink Rock Salt exclusively, the one extracted in the Salt Range Formation in Pakistan. Likewise, the mention of some other country in which the extraction of this rock salt has recognition of origin will be allowed. The pink rock salt must be washed and dried to ensure the absence of physical, chemical and biological contaminants prior to milling and processing.
Argentina – Argentina incorporates into the Food Code the Mercosur Regulation on packaging and materials in contact with foodstuffs
The Secretariat of Sanitary Quality and the Secretariat of Bioeconomy have published Joint Resolution 4/2024, which amends Article 195 of the Food Code to incorporate the Mercosur Technical Regulation on provisions for metallic packaging, coatings, utensils, lids and equipment in contact with food. This Technical Regulation applies to containers, coatings, utensils, lids and equipment made of metallic materials, coated or not, that come into contact with food and its raw materials during their production, processing, transport, distribution and storage.
