México – President of the Senate emphasizes the importance of the approval of the General Law on Adequate and Sustainable Food

At a press conference, the President of the Senate, Ana Lilia Rivera Rivera, explained that the new General Law on Adequate and Sustainable Food will lay the foundations for the promotion, protection, respect and guarantee of the right to food in Mexico. This new framework was approved by both Chambers of Congress and awaits publication in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF).

Senator Ana Lilia Rivera emphasized that the regulation marks a historic milestone because of its obligatory cut towards the guarantee of healthy food for all Mexicans by the Mexican State. She also added that it leaves clear rules and precise institutions, with no budgetary impact, but with organization and order for the bodies involved.

El Salvador – Extended the deadline for comments on RTCA 67.04.60:10 Nutrition Labeling of Prepackaged Food Products for Human Consumption for Persons Aged 3 Years and Older

The Salvadoran Technical Regulatory Agency (OSARTEC in Spanish) announces the extension of the 60-day deadline, starting March 15, 2024, to submit comments on the public consultation of the Central American Technical Regulation -RTCA- 67.01.60:23 Nutritional labeling of prepackaged food products for human consumption for the population from 3 years of age.

Mexico – In the National Congress, the General Law on Adequate Sustainable Food is endorsed

The Plenary of the Chamber of Deputies approved the issuance of the General Law on Adequate Sustainable Food, to guarantee the right to adequate food for the entire population of the country, as well as to promote the generation of sustainable food environments that encourage the informed consumption of healthy and nutritious food.
In addition, the minute prioritizes the right to health, the right to the environment, the right to water and the best interests of children, in policies related to adequate food by the State.

Brazil – MAPA publishes Normative Instruction IN 40, which approves the Consolidation of Standards for Beverages, Acetic Fermented Products, Wines and Grape and Wine Derivatives, domestic and imported

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock/Secretariat of Agrarian Defense (MAPA in Portuguese) has published Normative Instruction IN 40, which approves the Consolidation of Standards for Beverages, Acetic Fermented Products, Wines and Grape and Wine Derivatives, domestic and imported.
The Consolidation of Standards for Beverages, Acetic Fermented Products, Wines and Grape and Wine Derivatives, domestic and imported, in the form of Annex will be available for consultation on the official website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock .
The application of the standards included in the Consolidated Standards approved in this Normative Instruction shall be without prejudice to compliance with agreements, bilateral or multilateral, with countries importing beverage products, acetic fermented products, wines and grape and wine derivatives.
